Our Story...

A hillside farm shaped by seasons, wildlife, and a deep love of irises.

I’m Kara, and Enchanted Oaks Iris Farm is tucked into the quiet hills of Calimesa, California, where oak woodland and high chaparral meet in a way that feels both ancient and gently magical.

We were drawn here for the forest and the wildlife. The hush of the land. The feeling of being held and protected by the oaks. Over time, this place became more than home. It became a certified wildlife sanctuary, a living partnership between the land and those who tend it.

Wild sages, buckwheat, and a rich tapestry of native plants grow alongside the irises. Bears, mountain lions, foxes, coyotes, and countless smaller woodland creatures pass through. When we first arrived, much of the main flat area was barren and eerily quiet, with no birdsong at all. Over the years, we added a pond, planted trees, and created shelter and shade. Slowly, life returned. Now the air is filled with birds singing, and the land feels alive in a way that still stops me in my tracks.

I began growing irises here over ten years ago, partly because they were one of the few flowers the deer would mostly leave alone, unless a curious fawn decided otherwise. What began as a practical choice quickly turned into something much deeper. The iris addiction took hold, hard and fast. I fell in love with modern irises and their extravagant ruffles, as well as historic varieties for their resilience and old-soul charm.

This land is a study in contrast. Some areas are pure granite, others hold the most glorious, rich soil where irises thrive. Summers can be harsh and unforgiving, with a dry, desert sun. Winters bring cold nights and the occasional dusting of snow. Irises take it all in stride. They endure, they adapt, and then they rise each spring looking like absolute beauty queens.

We garden in partnership with the land, not in opposition to it. We use no pesticides anywhere on our nearly nine acres. The insects, pollinators, and soil life are deeply important to us. When you receive a rhizome from Enchanted Oaks, you can trust it has been lovingly cared for, free from chemical treatments that can affect plant health and bloom integrity.

We are a very small, boutique grower. While we grow over 1000 iris varieties, each is offered in limited quantities. What you see on the website truly reflects what is available, and numbers are intentionally small so every plant receives personal attention.

This farm began as a hobby and grew into a seasonal business. Outside of iris season, I am an artist. I paint, draw, and work in ceramics. I am also an art teacher and a mother. I care for the irises primarily alongside my husband, who helps with much of the heavy work, while I remain deeply involved in observing, selecting, tending, and preparing each rhizome for its next home.

Enchanted Oaks is not just where irises grow. It is a place shaped by seasons, wildlife, resilience, and quiet magic. I hope that when you plant one of our irises, a small piece of that enchantment takes root in your garden too.
