Black Is Black (Schreiner, 2010) TB HM AM WM

Black Is Black is a tall bearded iris introduced by Schreiner’s Gardens in 2010, growing about 37 inches tall and blooming midseason. The flowers are an intense near-black self, with both standards and falls a deep velvety black that gives the bloom a dramatic, modern presence in the garden. The beards are also black, creating a rare and striking monochromatic effect. This variety comes from a cross of ('Black Butte' x 'Dark Passion') with ('Paint It Black' x 'Thunder Spirit'), bringing together some of the strongest dark iris breeding lines. Black Is Black earned the Honorable Mention in 2012, the Award of Merit in 2014, and the Wister Medal in 2017, confirming it as one of the outstanding modern dark irises.
